Research - Understanding the Problem Before Designing the Solution

When I joined Captured, my first step was to pause before opening Figma screens.

Captured solves a meaningful problem, helping people find and relive moments from events. But as I explored the product, it became clear that different users experienced the platform in very different ways, and not always in a good way. To design responsibly, I needed to understand where each user struggled and why.

So instead of starting with layouts, I focused on understanding the system.

Problem

The existing product had multiple friction points:

  • Login and onboarding felt confusing for new users

  • Event creation had unclear steps and lacked guidance

  • Collaborator access was limited and not intuitive

  • The dashboard did not clearly show events, photos, or actions

  • Users struggled to understand what to do next at different stages

These issues affected both organizers and participants.

Design Work

Using the new structure, I worked on the following flows:

  • Login and onboarding

  • Reusable selfie capture logic to avoid repeated actions

  • End-to-end event creation and publish flow

  • Collaborator access and permissions

  • User and organiser dashboards

  • Photo discovery and purchase journey

All designs were created in Figma and shared through walkthroughs with the team to ensure alignment.

Iteration and Feedback

Based on walkthroughs and early feedback, I iterated on the designs by:

  • Adding clearer guidance for first-time users

  • Improving labels, copy, and hierarchy

  • Breaking complex steps into smaller, clearer actions

  • Refining the landing page to set better expectations

  • Improving clarity across organiser and runner experiences

Each iteration was driven by feedback and observed confusion, not assumptions.

Post-Race Videos on Captured

Alongside the core product redesign, I also worked on improving an existing feature within Captured, the post-race video experience.

At the time, runners could already purchase their race photos through the platform. However, the experience ended at static images. There was an opportunity to add more value by helping runners relive their race in a more meaningful way.

The idea was to generate a personalised video for each runner that combined:

  • Their race moments

  • Split-wise timings

  • Total finish time

This experience needed to work on top of the existing Captured system and scale across large marathon events.

The Design Challenge

Unlike typical UI flows, this was not a screen-based feature. The output was a dynamic video generated using runner data, timestamps, and images.

The challenge was to design something that:

  • Felt personal, not templated

  • Worked with dynamic data for thousands of runners

  • Could be clearly understood and built by the engineering team

This meant thinking beyond layouts and designing a system that tech could reliably generate.

My Role

I owned the design of the post-race video experience and created the full video structure in Figma. I broke the video into individual frames for each race moment, defined the overall flow, and designed for dynamic data like runner names and timings. To support development, I used simple prototypes to explain transitions and pacing, shared clear specs with the engineering team, stayed involved during implementation, and helped with QA by checking data accuracy and visual consistency.

Where This Shipped

This video experience was implemented within the existing Captured product for:

  • WNC Marathon

  • Bajaj Pune Marathon

Key Learnings

This project taught me to design systems before screens. By focusing on structure, roles, and flows, I learned how clarity comes from strong foundations. Working on the video experience pushed me to design with real data and constraints, and showed how close collaboration with engineering turns ideas into reliable experiences.
